Toyota is recalling about half a million RAV4 crossovers for windshield wipers that fail after excess water clogs their drains and causes rust. The problem is with the windshield cowling, which can warp and cause water to pool. This can then drip onto the joint that connects the windshield wiper motor to the wiper linkage and cause rust and then failure.
The recall affects 2009-2012 model year Toyota RAV4 crossovers built in Canada as well as the 2012-2014 RAV4 EV of that body style. The recall has been issued via the NHTSA as a voluntary recall from Toyota, who noticed the problem in 2012 and found 32 warranty claims since. No accidents or injuries are associated with the recall.
Dealerships will replace the channels as well as wiper arms and covers. The recall will begin in mid-November.
