Possibly the most sought-after classic race car, the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, will be shown by Bonhams at the Monterey Pre-Reunion on August 9 and 10. Only 39 of this car were ever made. This weekend sees historic car racing at its finest at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca with examples of many types of beautiful classic car being showcased on the track.
This Ferrari is chassis number 3851GT and is from the Maranello Rosso Collection, where it’s been cared for over the past 49 years. The car and nine others from the collection will be up for sale at the Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction on August 14.
“Collectors around the world are eagerly awaiting auction day to see what the market will command for such a historically significant and rarely available automobile,” said Mark Osborne, head of motoring for Bonhams in the U.S. “There is no reserve on this car, meaning that it will be sold to the highest bidder regardless of what that bid is. And what better way to showcase it than in front of racers and collectors who are at the Monterey Pre-Reunion.”
This example of the Ferrari 250 GTO was the nineteenth of the 39 made, but because two of them were specialty 350 four-liters, this is considered the 17th 250 GTO to be built. Its first owner was French privateer Jo Schlesser, who entered it into the 1962 Tour de France Automobile with ski champion Henri Oreiller, finishing second overall.
