The Genesis brand first appeared in 2015 and the G70 became the brand’s midsized luxury sedan offering just three years later. Now, for 2022, the G70 gets an overhaul and becomes a top choice in entry-level luxury.
The 2022 Genesis G70 has a new grille, new rear lighting, new infotainment, along with some interior changes. The manual transmission, which didn’t sell well, has been dropped as well.
The most pronounced changes on that list are to the exterior of the G70. This is a beautiful sedan at every angle. The classic saloon style is augmented now with a diamond-shaped mesh grille with a hint of chrome. Below the grille flanks two intakes spread apart to emphasize the divided headlamps that are a signature Genesis trait. The bodywork and silhouette of the G70 are simple and classic. Brake vents behind the front wells and a slight bulge at the rear haunch lends sportiness to the forward movement of the car’s design.
Inside, quality materials are found throughout the 2022 G70 with just enough trim, contrast, and offset to give it an appealing look without being garish. The driver’s instruments are easy to read and the stand-up infotainment screen is just without touchscreen reach. The layout of controls and buttons is intuitive. Where the G70 lacks is in its 10.5-cubic inch trunk, which is smaller than average. But it comes with hands-free release as standard and the rear seats fold down to add more pass-through.
The 2022 Genesis G70 has two engine options, starting with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that’s turbocharged to produce 252 horsepower. Rear wheel drive is standard, as is an eight-speed automatic transmission. This engine is punchy and fast and doesn’t feel like a “base option” at all.
The upgrade option is a 3.3-liter turbocharged V6 that outputs 365 horses. The same eight-speed automatic, tuned to match this engine, runs the rear wheels. This is the fast-paced option for the G70 and it’s a beautiful goer.
Either engine and transmission can be had in all-wheel drive as well, which we’d recommend. It adds a good driving dimension to the road and feels more controlled in everyday driving.
On the road, the Genesis G70 is smooth and confident. The pace is good and sporty, but not necessarily breakneck or powerful. It’s a comfortable, classy way of driving instead of a muscle-or-else setup. We like that and it’s a good fit for most luxury sedan buyers.
With excellent comfort, a strong drive dynamic, and timeless beauty on its side, there’s not much to dislike about the 2022 Genesis G70. The Genesis brand is one of our favorites across the board and the G70 is a top choice in luxury sedans for us.
