Mazda is recalling Mazda3 and Mazda6 vehicles equipped with the i-ELOOP mild hybrid system built from May through December of last year. The vehicle’s computer (Power Control Module or PCM) can falsely detect a failure in heavy rain and shut down the i-ELOOP system, leading to power loss in the vehicle.
Mazda says that no injuries or deaths have been associated with the problem, but since complete vehicular shut down is possible, the recall is necessary. Drivers of the vehicles should be aware that three warning lights and a system message to the driver will sound should the water problem occur and that the driver should immediately pull over and park safely.
The recall affects only about 6,000 vehicles in the United States and Mazda is issuing recall notices to owners now. This follows another recall of older Tribute vehicles (and related Ford products) for corrosion issues.
