The Traverse sees several changes as it goes into its third generation. This three-row has long been a favorite family hauler for us and this new design keeps that love going. There are a lot of great options in the three-row market and the Traverse remains one of the better ones.
Compared to most three-row options, the Traverse has a larger third row and cargo space thanks to its larger wheelbase and overall length when compared. Other changes for this third generation of the Traverse include a new engine, an added top trim level, more technology, and a new overall design.
The 2024 Traverse is much like its near-twin at Buick, the Enclave, which we reviewed just a few days ago. We drove both vehicles and really liked the Enclave’s quality interior design and upscale feel. For those not looking for that and hoping to lower the price tag as a result, the Traverse is equally as good without the luxury trappings.
The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse gets a blockier, more truck-like look this time around, sharpening the lines of the more rounded previous generation. A more distinctive Chevrolet grille, flatter body paneling, and a straight roofline are the basic design motifs that make the new look. Inside, similar changes are found with more robust elements and added storage. The huge new screens and added driver tech bring the Traverse into this new generation of higher tech.
Under its hood, the new 2024 Traverse has a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that displaces 2.5 liters and outputs 328 horsepower and 326 pound-feet of torque. This pairs to an eight-speed automatic transmission in front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is an option with all trim levels. This engine outputs over 22 percent more than the outgoing V6 it replaces. And adds more fuel economy while doing so.
The turbo-four is a good match for the Traverse and its size. It doesn’t have too much lag, thanks to smart programming in the transmission, and it never feels inadequate. Probably its best attribute is its power push on the highway, where a downshift and some turbo go a long way towards making the Traverse feel confident. Around town, the wait to get going might be noticed, but not often.
From the base model, higher-end tech like a WiFi hotspot, wireless CarPlay and Auto, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and a 360-degree camera system are standard. Optional equipment, that is standard on some trim levels as you go up, include larger wheels, a digital rearview mirror, a hands-free power liftgate, vented front seats, and Super Cruise hands-free driving. Additionally, a trailering package adds trailer assist systems such as camera-based hitch alignment, a transmission cooling system, and light plugs.
For an everyday family hauler, the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse is a great drive. It feels confident, can carry up to eight people, has a huge amount of cargo space, and is capable in a myriad of scenarios. Competitors like the Mazda CX-90 and Honda Pilot have a softer feel to them in both look and drive quality. The Kia Telluride and Ford Explorer are strong competitors in feel and appeal, though, that cross-shoppers should compare to the Traverse. The new generation Traverse is a solid choice, we think.
Pricing for the 2024 Traverse starts at around $40,000 with delivery.
