GLE Class is the latest Mercedes Benz SUV to get the very special edition designed to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the AMG performance branch.
This has been a special year for AMG. It has become a wholly owned subsidiary of Mercedes Benz, it has received enough space within the company to develop an entire model (the AMG GT), and it has just welcomed the iconic SL in its exclusive lineup. With so many reasons to celebrate, it is only natural that the celebration would take many forms as well. The GLE Class is the latest one of them.
The external changes are mostly focused on appearance. The Edition 55 package adds 22” forged Mercedes Benz wheels in matte grey, exclusive hubcaps, silver chrome fuel cap, AMG-themed side decals, and two special color options: Obsidian Black Metallic or Diamond White Metallic. The latter was created by the Manufaktur division, which was created last year to concentrate the maker’s bespoke offerings.
The AMG Night Package is present as well, which means you will also find high-gloss black on mirror caps and window surroundings. Besides that, the exhaust tip comes in black, and the rear glass has heat insulation. Other than that, the GLE Class brings everything you already see on the regular 53 and 63 S versions tuned by AMG, whether in the traditional SUV or in the sporty Coupé body styles.
You will find more exclusive items inside. The Nappa leather upholstery comes in black and red, the trim is filled with carbon fiber accents, there is an AMG Performance steering wheel with microfiber inserts, the door sills are made of stainless steel and illuminated with the AMG lettering in red, and the brand’s logo is embossed on the center console’s palm rest. And there are “Edition 55” badges.
The 53 version uses a turbocharged 3.0L I6 engine good for 429 hp of power and 384 lb-ft of torque plus the EQ Boost system: it is an electric motor that delivers 21 hp and 184 lb-ft for short periods. This mild-hybrid setup takes the model in both body styles from 0 to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds and to the electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. However, there is an even more powerful option.
The 63 S uses the well-known twin-turbo 4.0L V8 that develops 603 hp and 627 lb-ft which also uses the EQ Boost system. In this case, the acceleration figure is improved to 3.7 seconds while the top speed is electronically limited to 174 mph. Just like the G Class, it is highly expected that this will be the last GLE to use this V8 engine, since the company is embracing electrification more than ever.
Depending on the region, this edition may also come in the 55 and regular 63 variations. The ones mentioned above are dedicated to the USA and will come in a total of 55 units. Besides that, all GLE Class Edition 55 units will bring an exclusive indoor car cover. After all, Mercedes Benz wants to do whatever it can to help you preserve these tokens of such an important anniversary for the brand.
