The BMW 4 Series is what most people think of immediately upon hearing the term “sport coupe.” It’s the benchmark for the small sport coupe category. Introduced in 2002, the 4 Series has seen several changes plus a generational upgrade since.
For the segment, the distinguishing marks of the 4 Series are its civilized way of handling everyday driving, it sporty feel, and those signature good looks. At the top of the 4 Series lineup is the M4, but the 2020 BMW 430i and 440i models are also extremely good turbocharged options for the coupe class.
In the American market, the BMW 4 Series appeals to a more sophisticated luxury sport coupe buyer and fits with the persona of one who both enjoys driving and enjoys comfort. It’s sporty, fun, but not overexcited.
In Europe, the 4 Series has similar appeal, but often adds a love of the road to the driver’s repertoire. Many who travel to Europe, in fact, will rent a BMW 4 Series specifically as part of their trip. It’s that good. Lease deals at places like Orangewheels in the UK are a good example of long-term 4 Series use during travel in Europe.
The 2020 BMW 4 Series comes in the 430i model with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. This runs to an eight-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual option. The 440i model of the 4 Series upgrades to a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that produces 326 hp and 332 lb-ft and uses a tuned version of the same eight-speed auto or six-speed manual. In either case, rear-wheel drive is the norm and xDrive all-wheel drive is an option. Going to the M4 model upgrades everything for a far more powerful drive, taking that 3.0L six to 425 horses and 406 lb-ft. A six-speed manual transmission or seven-speed dual clutch automatic are options.
Whatever version of the 2020 BMW 4 Series you choose, though, you get the same roomy interior, the smart controls layout, and the well-done infotainment system for navigation and audio controls. Several advanced technologies including automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning are also standard equipment. An adaptive sport suspension, performance brakes, premium leather upholstery, adaptive headlamps, and wireless device charging are optional upgrades in all BMW 4 Series models.
No matter what 4 is chosen, it’s well understood that this sport coupe defines the genre for the luxury market. Beautiful, comfortable, and well-mannered. The kind of vehicle you’d take home to meet mom, but fun enough that you’ll enjoy your time alone as well.
