Electric vehicle upfitter Unplugged Performance has unveiled its inaugural Tesla Model Y Police to launch a new fleet division called “UPfit.” The Tesla-based patrol vehicle was unveiled at Tesla Takeover in California. The vehicle will be the first in several planned UPfit police-oriented models using various EV models as part of its Public Safety platform design.
“The needs of law enforcement, public safety, military, and corporate fleets are rapidly changing. EVs provide an ideal outcome of taxpayer savings, cleaner air, minimized maintenance downtime, and extreme capability on the job. Police vehicles require an always-on state to support onboard electronics and maintain a readiness to respond at a moment’s notice. While idling, a 2018 Ford Police Interceptor Utility Police Car consumes 1,633 gallons of fuel per year. Hybrids such as the 2022 Ford Interceptor Hybrid consume 730 gallons per year on average. An EV would, clearly, burn no fuel while keeping all of the on-board electronics and connection tech operating.
