Moving house can be a daunting task at the best of times. If you are moving house yourself then you will want to make the task as pain free as possible. It’s surprising to realise just how much ‘stuff’ you have when moving. The last thing you want is to discover that the van or truck you have hired is too small to fit everything. To help with this we have put together a quick guide on choosing the right vehicle for your move.
Delivery Van
Approximate internal size: 2.3m x 1.6m x 1.35m (approx)
Appropriate for moving a couple of small items. This will accommodate a single mattress and base.
Single Cab Tray Truck
Approximate internal size: 1.6m x 1.48m (approx)
Similar to a deliver van this is only appropriate for a few small items. Unlike a delivery van there are no height restrictions (within reason). Make sure you have rope available to tie down your load securely.
High Roof Delivery Van
Approximate internal size: 4.25m x 1.9m x 1.76m (approx)
This is ideal for moving a small 1 bedroom apartment. It can easily accommodate a queen size mattress.
3 Tonne Moving Truck
Approximate internal size: 4.2m x 2m x 2m (approx)
This is ideal for moving a 3 bedroom home. Be sure to use tie down rails to secure your belongings. A hydraulic lift is also important as it makes transporting heavy furniture much more manageable.
Choosing a truck hire company
When looking for a moving truck hire company the first thing that comes to mind is price. This can be a mistake however as the cheapest option isn’t always the best. Cheap rates can sometimes come with hidden fees. Always be sure to check the terms and conditions of your rental agreement. You should also always ask if there are limited kilometers when renting as there can sometimes be an additional cost associated with this. Another important consideration is how much they charge for insurance and the excess that needs to be paid when a claim is made. When hiring the truck be sure to ask about the time it needs to be returned by, the last thing you want is to be charged for an extra day! Lastly, always check the reviews of the truck hire company before deciding who to go with.
