Volkswagen Sets Record on Pikes Peak with Electric Racer

The Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak, a specially-made electric race car, has set a new record for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The 500 kW car was piloted by Romain Dumas to win the world-famous uphill climb against all comers. The run also bettered precious electric vehicle records for the Pikes Peak IHC, including those set by Sebastian Loeb, Walter Rohrl, Michele Mouton, Stig Blomqvist, the Millens, and more.

“The I.D. R Pikes Peak is the sporty forerunner of Volkswagen’s I.D. family. Today, we saw what this technology is capable of,” said Dr. Frank Welsch, Member of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand with responsibility for “Technical Development”.

According to Volkswagen, the VW I.D. R Pikes Peak was raced by Romain Dumas, who has run the Pikes Peak challenge to four victories thus far in his career. The car was designed and built in only 250 days – less than a year.
