After a comprehensive internal safety review, General Motors has issued more recalls after their initial ignition switch recall last week. These separate recalls involve U.S. production and sales for nearly two million vehicles.
The bulk of them are SUVs from the Buick, GMC, Chevrolet and Saturn brands. These total about 1.8 million vehicles and include the 2008-2013 Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia models, 2009-2013 Chevrolet Traverse models, and 2008-2010 Saturn Outlook models.
The rest of the vehicles on the recall list are about 303,000 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vehicles from 2009-2014 model years (all sub-10,000 pound models) and 63,900 Cadillac XTS full-size sedans from 2013 and 2014.
The voluntary recalls are for instrument panel changes for unrestrained occupants impact requirements in the Express and Savana vans. The XTS can have the break booster pump can create positive pressure within the wiring harness, allowing corrosive elements to enter the connector and create a short and fire. Finally, the SUVs that make up the bulk of this latest recall were found to have a Service Air Bag warning light that, if ignored, results in the airbag failing to deploy in an accident. The issue is caused by faulty wiring in the airbag relay’s harness.
“Today’s announcement underscores the focus we’re putting on the safety and peace of mind of our customers. We are conducting an intense review of our internal processes and will have more developments to announce as we move forward,” said Mary Barra, GM CEO.
GM expects to take a charge of approximately $300 million in the first quarter primarily for the cost of the repairs for the three safety actions and the previously announced ignition switch recall.
